Michael James “Jim” Jennings was born in Minneapolis in 1924. He grew up in the city and attended West High School, where he distinguished himself as an outstanding athlete and football player. He later continued his athletic career at the University of Minnesota, playing football at the collegiate level.
During World War II, Jim served honorably in the United States Armed Forces. His service years shaped much of his discipline, leadership, and lifelong commitment to community.
Jim married Catherine "Katie" Jennings, with whom he shared a long and devoted marriage. They had the following children:

He was also the proud grandfather of eight grandchildren.
Jim became one of the Twin Cities’ best‑known restaurateurs, building a multi‑decade legacy in Minnesota’s hospitality industry. His establishments included:

His peers recognized him with induction into both the Minnesota Restaurant Hall of Fame and the Minnesota License Beverage Association Hall of Fame, and he was once named Operator of the Year for the state of Minnesota.
Jim was a passionate golfer. Introduced to the sport early in life, he remained an active player for decades and was a 67‑year member of the Minneapolis Golf Club, playing well into his nineties.
Remembered as a faith‑filled, humble, loving, and generous man, Jim was admired by family, friends, employees, and patrons alike. His life blended athletic achievement, military service, entrepreneurial success, and deep devotion to his family.
A Mass of Christian Burial was held at Pax Christi Catholic Community in Eden Prairie on June 10, 2019.
